USA 2019 - Week 4, New Orleans

Our first night in New Orleans (Thursday) started with a sazerac at the Roosevelt's aptly named Sazerac Bar, and ended with an even more aptly named Hand Grenade cocktail on Bourbon street, with live music at the Swamp and the Bourbon O Bar in between. Bourbon street is actually really cool; I think it's what I thought Vegas would be like (and then was disappointed when it wasn't), and it much more live music-y than I thought it would be.

Yesterday we caught the street car to the Commander's Palace where we had our first try of turtle soup (can't think about it too hard, poor little turtles but it was delicious), our second sazerac, and a whole bunch of 25c Martinis. I got some more catfish (man I love catfish), and the souffle was delicious.

We then took a short walk through the above ground cemetery, followed by a long walk through some incredibly rich looking suburbs to Cure bar for an amazing cocktail. Andrew got a tin hat, and I asked for something bitter and tart to help work through the giant lunch, and the bar tender definitely delivered.

We caught the street car back, relaxed a bit (ok napped), then headed back out to Frenchman Street for some more live music. We stopped at Cafe du Monde on the way for a beignete and some chicory coffee. The beignete was a delicious, dense doughnut very similar to Mina's gogosi. I think Mina's are better, but I'll let her decide!

Our first stop was the Spotted Cat where we saw a really cool 4 piece band. The place was exactly like lots of places they go in Treme! Then something very serendipitous happened... we were walking along looking for the next place to stop in, and noticed that the Blue Moon had Kermit Ruffins (Kermit, from Treme) playing that night!

The set was really fun and lively, and they finished off with Treme, so cool man. Definitely worth the $15 cover charge, and the accidental 2am finish and disgusting walk through Bourbon street on the way back.

This morning we had a big sleep in, used the gym, then headed out for a po' boy lunch at Jackson's square. Andrew got an oyster po' boy from Johnny's Po-Boys, and I got a gluten-free chicken one from Meals from the Heart in the French Market. Andrew managed to resist the urge to shoot the pigeons for shards like in inFamous.
