Mind, Blown

Guys, my mind is well and trully blown. I don't know what's real anymore.

Today I went to a Fringe show, "Alex McAleer: Mind Reader", with Emma and Joe. It was a show that looked like it was going to have audience interaction, and we were joking beforehand how we definitely didn't want to get on so we would sit a bit further back.

Turns out that Alex's way to get audience participation involved throwing a ball into the audience, so sitting back didn't actually help. For me in particular. He threw the ball and it landed on a guy, who then threw it on to land smack bang in my lap.

We both went up on stage, and the guy was the first to be part of the act. He had to think of a word in the English language that was between 5 and 7 letters, and wasn't a name or a place. He wrote the word on a piece of paper that he then put in an envelope and put on the floor. Alex then guessed the word by writing it on a clipboard, showing the audience, and then confirming that the guys word was in fact "student". Wow.

I was next. Alex got me to think about my first kiss; name, age and location. I had to write these on a piece of paper and fold the paper up, and put it in a small envelope which I then dropped on the floor. When I wrote the information down I made sure to hide the paper. Alex then asked me, did the name of my first kiss start with D? It did. No other questions before hand, he got D straight away. He then wrote the name Daniel on the clipboard and showed the audience; he was right! He then guessed my age by writing it on the clipboard and showing the audience. He guessed 13, but I said 14 (which was what I wrote on the paper), but he quickly glossed over that small discrepancy and went straight to the location. He asked me if it was outside, I said yes. It's Australia, so outside could mean beach, park, so many other places, but he straight away guessed "tree", and god damn it he was right! So the only thing he got wrong was my age.

The rest of the show was equally amazing (all to do with why you shouldn't play cards with a "mind reader"), and while I was watching I slowly realised that I got my age wrong. My first kiss was in the summer holidays between year 7 and year 8... I WAS 13! He knew more about my life than I did! I even wrote 14 down on the paper! Someone please explain this to me.

At the end of the show I went and told him he was right about me being 13, and he got me to yell it out to everyone who was leaving the audience, he was pretty proud he actually got it right while I was trying not to explode.

I am a cynic, I didn't give anything away (what part of my face said D?), I am officially broken. Everyone afterwards was asking me if I was a plant! I was not! Go see this guy next year (tonight was his last show), and try to catch that god damn life changing ball.

NYE 2016 at the Trustee

Happy New Year! Wishing everyone an happy and healthy 2017.

This year we decided to go to the Trustee for NYE for a 5 course degustation dinner and then the Angels Cut bar upstairs for midnight.

The dinner was $119 for a 5 course menu with choice of main, no drinks included. Our booking was for 8:30pm, and we showed up on the dot after going upstairs for a drink at the Angels Cut bar beforehand. There was a long line waiting for the previous dinner wave to finish up (there was a 6:30pm booking option too). JP and Serjana met us in the line, and we were pretty much at the front. I missed this, but apparently a couple stormed to the front of the line demanding to be seated and got told to "back off" by the waitress, so it was clearly a stressful changeover for the staff!

The food was really amazing. I was so impressed by the fillet steak that came out done perfectly at was full of flavour. The others weren't happy with the oyster at the start (apparently it was too fishy) but I gave up and didn't manage to eat it anyway! I'm sure I wouldn't have managed even if it was a perfect oyster. Although the food was good, it came out soooo slowly. We had our first entre at 9:30, and our dessert arrived at 11:15! It was pretty clear that coffee and tea wasn't happening before midnight so we left to go upstairs. I waited in line for the bathroom before going upstairs and got out just in time to see a girl ready to spew pushing her way to the front of the line, glad I made it in before that!

We had been speculating about what kind of music might be playing, and we were quite convinced with our guess of 80s hits with lots of Bowie, Prince, and George Michael, but man o man were we wrong. The first song was Nicki Minaj's Anaconda (don't judge me for knowing it, it was a Fever Workout routine song way back), which was followed up by My Neck, My Back... yuck. With 5 minutes to go (we know because the DJ yelled "5 minutes to go biitchhessss) we ordered our last drinks. I got another Dark and Stormy which was awesome (I was having those all night), and got Simona a Frose which was god awful and no one drank. The countdown missed 12:00 by about 2 minutes (you had one job!) and we didn't stay long afterwards to dance since the dance floor smelt like vomit.

In conclusion, the Trustee for new years eve was very disappointing. Last year we went to the Garden in Leederville and that was amazing, but I'm not sure if that was because we had low hopes then were really impressed, which was the opposite of what happened this year. The food was good, but the service was terrible and they really had no excuse since most of the courses were cold, and this isn't their first year running the event. The music was just truly awful, not what I would have expected at all, and it just made me realise that it's probably not possible to have a classy new years eve in Perth! I will severely lower my expectations next year, but I will definitely not be going back to the Trustee.

I complain a lot but we actually did enjoy ourselves because the company was nice, and you just have to laugh at these situations because what else can you do! Also it's the least boozy new years I've had in a long time, feeling great today!
