2025-06-16 Bucuresti - Caru Cu Bere, Old Town, Dmitrie Gusti Open Air Museum

After a bunch of long delays, we finally arrived in Bucuresti! Getting through passport check took close to 2hours, and thank god for the Air Tags, they were really helpful finding our luggage on a random carousel somewhere. After an unfortunate first impression created by the airport, we met up with my dad’s childhood friend Mari who kindly gave us a lift to the Grand Bucharest Hotel and lifted our spirits. It was lovely to catch up and hear some stories about growing up in Bucuresti!

We checked in and quickly headed out to our booking at Caru Cu Bere, a famous restaurant which we’ve heard mixed things about (mostly that it's too expensive for what it is). We absolutely loved it! The building was incredibly beautiful, the salate de vinete, sarmale, mititai, tocanita de cupreici, and papanasi, were all really great, I can’t imagine why some people don’t rate the food. We got all of that plus beers and visinata for about $170AUD which is similar to a meal in Perth and totally worth it. We also really enjoyed the entertainment of traditional dancing and “singing”, which involved a lot of screaming, but in a good way.

The walk around the old town was filled with historical buildings with amazing level of detail, very cool.

Today we ran to the Dmitrie Gusti open air museum, which is a collection of houses that they’ve literally dismantled, transported and rebuilt in a lovely garden. We both really enjoyed the run there, and spent hours in the park and really could have spent the whole day. Highlights other than the interesting houses were seeing a turtle, buying a bunch of treats (cornulete, nuci, salam de chocolata, and a few others), seeing cats wandering lazily through the place, and the sheer beauty of the park itself.

We caught the subway home from Aviatorilor to Universitate and we’re now taking a little rest then will head back out to see the Palace of the Parliament, probably only from the outside.
