2025-06-11 Belgrade - Plato, Farmers Markets, Bar Central, BKK, Cevap cod Dekija, National Museum, Indigo Hotel

Dinner at Plato was lovely, it’s a gorgeous restaurant with lots of trees and plants, right near where Iva did her undergraduate degree. More chevapi and plescavita! We also discovered that Serbian salad comes with a really hot pepper, that looks deceivingly like a capsicum, it was a hot surprise but we keep going back for more.

Yesterday, we started off with a Drip coffee (actually flat whites!) and little treats from the downstairs bakery before heading out to the farmers markets at the end of Skadarlija street (the cobblestone one). We got tomatoes, radishes, capsicum (it was an absolute guess to whether they were the hot kind in Serbian salad), raspberries, strawberries, apricots, walnuts, dried peaches, and tiny little strawberries (fragute) that my my mum had always told me about, although unfortunately they didn’t smell as intoxicating as she’d described. We had all of this for lunch before heading out to the Tesla museum.

We arrived to find a huge line for the 2pm English guided tour session, so decided to grab a drink and wait for the next session. Andrew found a gorgeous garden bar where we had aperol spritz to cool us down. Unfortunately Jenny got a little too cooled down when the waiter dropped one all over her! He’d even saved one drink tipping over second before, but couldn’t keep it together and dropped the last one. All good, it was very relaxing, and we hopped back in line for the 4pm session.

The Tesla museum was great to visit, but one of those experiences where you’re glad you didn’t wait in line in the hot sun for. We learned about his plan to provide free wireless electricity to the world, his cool homage to the poet (Zmaj), and saw some cool zaps, but were disappointed that his love (like, love love) of pigeons wasn’t mentioned once.

More cocktails! Bar Central was modern and cool, and we were caught off guard when the response to hvala for the drinks was a very aussie “no worries”. The drinks were great, and the bar tender from Melbourne gave us some more recommendations, mostly ones we’d heard of, except for BKK which I wrote down in my phone. Belgrade Kocktail Klub was next, and this just beat Riddle Bar for best place yet! It was a similar concept where the bar tender asked for some prompts and made us drinks to our tastes. Claire got an olivey drink, Andrew got a whisky drink with walnut rakjia (he reckons it’s the best drink so far), and I got a sour drink with bergamot liquor. All fantastic! When the bar tender asked us where we wanted to go next, I mentioned that BKK was on the list, to which he replied by theatrically pointing downwards (turns out BKK == Belgrade Kocktail Klub and we absolutely had heard of it), I blame the cocktails. We chatted some more and learned that his opinion on the most beautiful word in Serbian is prascozoria, the time just before the sunrise, a lovely sentiment.

Dinner was… more chevapi and plescavita! We met up with Andrew’s parents at Ćevap kod Dekija for more delicious Serbian food, including more hot Serbian salad. The puzzle is progressing well!

Today Andrew did a short run, I did a Heather Robertson, and we ate delicious fruit (and burek for Andrew) for breakfast before the National Museum (coolest thing was the coin exhibit stored in the building's real bank vault), and lunch (sarma, polenta, paprikas, and Liz’s gigantic snitzel) at Fleur du Mal at the Indigo Hotel. We are having a rest now before heading out to Iva Balkan Cuisine for dinner, it’s been recommended so many times that I can’t wait to try it! I’ll have to fight the urge to get another plescavita.
