3 days ago we said goodbye to the paradise that is Monkey Mia with some beach exploring, a visit to Denham and Eagle Bluff, and a couple more dolphin experiences. Monkey Mia to Exmouth was a lovely drive - the stop off at Shell Beach made me happy for the fly net present I got from Andrew's parents last Christmas, but the main point is that I cannot believe how many termite mounds there are on the way between the two places. There are literally hundreds of thousands of gigantic termite mounds. I was outraged at first (I don't know why, maybe I expected some forewarning), but then thought there may be some way to use the mounds to our advantage, maybe some sort of fence if we can encourage the terminates to build logically? Andrew thinks I'm crazy.
Exmouth has been another, new paradise. Mantaray's is stunning accommodation with an incredible pool that overlooks the water on the east (which makes for an unfamiliar and beautiful sunset), and lots of cool things around town (including two IGA's inexplicably 20 steps from each other).
Last night we visited one of the two IGAs and got some cheese and snacks and watched Titanic; after listening to the two Stuff You Should Know episodes about the Titanic on the drive we both got a craving to watch it again (we didn't make the whole movie, part two will be tonight).
Today we went to Turquoise Bay to snorkel the Ningaloo Reef using the handy drift current. We saw 4 turtles, 1 reef shark, 1 stingray, and about a million colourful fish, coral, and of course, the many majestic sea cucumbers. I cannot believe what I experienced today, it honestly felt like a new world, and I even managed to not panic too much! Andrew encouraged me lots and made sure we got out of the drift before going out to sea, which was actually not that easy. Another highlight was seeing and hearing a school of fish munching on the coral, it was such a cool experience, and an unbelievable beach.
On the way back we stopped at Froth Brewery, and Whalebone Brewery for a couple of tasting paddles, to spy on Tim Winton, and to catch up on the recent Perth COVID news (fingers crossed for just 3 days).
We're just about to head into the Mantaray's restaurant for dinner, and after all that snorkelling we are starving!
