The 2025 Perth Royal Show was another wonderful and magical experience, and absolutely worth the allergies!
Monday was Kaylie’s 40th, guests were animals of all shapes and sizes, birthday cake was doughnuts and fairy floss, and drinks were wine, gin and whiskey tastings.
Wednesday was the show day to myself, I really like having a day where I can take my time and see everything. I started off by wondering if mining simulation might be in Immersive’s future, D421 is just one number off a machine we already simulate, and I found a team mascot (Sunshine), so many signs!
Animals are such a big part of the show. Some highlights were the gigantic things (main coon cats, goat balls, peacocks), the tiny things (dachshunds, chicks, piglets, calves, bunnies), walking in to Born Slippy playing at the cow milking demonstration (apparently the cows prefer classical, but the farmer and I share some other tastes), the sheepdog trials were amazing as usual.
But I missed Rain when visiting our farmer friend at the animal nursery, with his unique were-pigs.
I spent lots of time dorking around in the poultry pavilion, these guys get it!
I always spend an extra long time in here, this time the amazing patterns really caught my eye amongst the chaos of the roosters going off every 5 seconds.
The peacocks were being extra majestic this year.
The wood chopping was so cool to watch, it’s always really hit and miss (haha) getting there for an event, but I managed to see one of the final heats for a national title that was happening the next day. The guy I filmed was the current title holder and had a 37 second handicap (he came 3rd)!
I said yes to a leg massage (this was a new one, and definitely a do again), saw Avril’s winning chess leatherwork masterpiece in the cookery pavilion, then met Andrew in the lounge for the Flying Fools (that man jumped from up high on that mast into a little pool!), the motor cross (always so impressive, especially when they completely let go), and the amazing fireworks.
Our haul will remind us of the show for the upcoming year! One highlight is the bird whistle we got as the member’s night gift - it really works, despite the ridiculous instructions. We used it on the way home and were surprised and delighted when birds answered back! But then we felt bad because it was night time, and we probably woke up a bunch of poor birds with god knows what gibberish.
Next year will be my 10th year of membership, the magic is still alive after 9!
